Our Story
Our story began in December 1941 when Jackson community leaders formed a nonprofit entity to raise funds and distribute them as local grants. These leaders wanted to provide stability to local organizations serving the most vulnerable populations.
Established as the Community Chest, this organization later became known as United Way of West Tennessee. During its first year, United Way raised over $25,000, the equivalency of over $500,000 today! Eighty-four years later, we continue to serve the community by seeking donations that fund local nonprofits and programs within our 15-county service area.
Over the decades, we have provided support whenever needed. As new opportunities in West Tennessee emerge, we adapt to ensure every person can thrive through forging partnerships and launching initiatives to support every stage of life. From helping children gain confidence in reading, to collaborating on community development projects, our expansion is a direct response to the needs of a thriving region.
We mobilize communities to action so all can thrive.
United is the Way
Our work has just begun. As more families move to West Tennessee and businesses recognize our region’s potential, the need for comprehensive community development will rise. United Way stands ready — backed by passionate volunteers, generous donors, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to innovation — to meet that challenge.
United Way will keep meeting every person where they are: providing literacy support, growing local leadership, strengthening financial stability, and offering spaces where hope is turned into tangible action for community impact. Our history is filled with countless stories of tragedy transformed into victory, and we will continue this narrative moving forward.
Whether you are a financial giver, volunteer, or advocate, your support matters. Our work is possible because of your contribution. Help us build a more resilient West Tennessee where everyone, from our youngest readers to our most seasoned leaders, has the tools to thrive.
Sincerely,
Matt Marshall, President/CEO of United Way of West Tennessee
